18 October 2007
New Zealand New Zealand is to give $5 million (USD 3.75 million) towards a tuna tagging program in the Pacific.
Prime Minister Helen Clark made the announcement in Tonga, where the annual Pacific Islands Forum leaders summit is underway.
Miss Clark says fisheries is one of five issues being discussed during Wednesday's leaders' retreat on the island of Vavau.
She says the tuna fishery is a valuable resource for developing nations in the Pacific, and the tagging program will provide information for stock assessment to ensure sustainable management.
New Zealand's contribution is part of a $13m program.
