“Canned In Australia” Tuna In High Demandff

18 October 2007 Australia

Demand for “Made in Australia” tuna has seen hundreds of people contact the nation’s only tuna cannery, Port Lincoln Tuna Processors (PLTP).

Tuna is Australia’s most popular canned seafood product and PLTP is the only cannery in Australia that cans tuna for sale in Australian supermarkets nationally.

Recent media reports warning against contaminated seafood imports have prompted people to contact PLTP about where they can get tuna canned in Australian.

According to general manager Lea Traeger the current food safety issue has highlighted the importance of Australian based manufacturing and its stringent quality controls.

”We have had hundreds of consumers contact us wanting to know where to buy Australian made canned tuna, so the current issue has obviously hit a nerve,” she said.

The company produces canned tuna for John West’s “Tuna Tempters” range (excluding 95g John West tuna in olive oil) and some 95g John West pink salmon variants.

Consumers can easily identify John West Australian canned tuna products by the “Canned in Australia” logo found on the cans.

Ms Traeger said PLTP also manufactured a range of canned tuna and pink salmon for export to America as well as a range of other innovative pouched food products for sale in Australia, such as liquid gravies, baby food, cooking sauces, custards and pasta meals.
