Pirates Attack Spanish Tuna Vessels In Somaliaff

4 October 2007 Spain

The Basque Group demanded the Government in the Madrid’s Chamber of Deputies, an effective proceeding to eradicate the attacks suffered by the tuna fishing boats in the Indian Ocean.

After the appearance in the Court to explain the situation of the tuna fishing boats in the Indian Ocean, the spokesman of the Basque Group, Josu Erkoreka, claimed “the states maximum cover to end up with the attacks suffered by the Basque tuna fishing boats in Somalia, because it is the Government who has to care about the security of these vessels”.

In his speech, Erkoreka called for “more Government’s responsibility towards the future, and to proceed effectively the possible attacks against tuna fishing boats, because this is a politic, economic, and mainly a human problem”.

The nationalist spokesman felt disappointed because they did not used the measure presented by his group and approved in the Deputy Chamber that claims for more security in the Indian Ocean.

According to Erkoreka, the options given by the State Secretary, (asking for help to the EU, or to the NATO) “do not offer any guarantee, and it is good to remember that the vessels of the NATO, will only be there two weeks of the three or four months the tuna fishing lasts”. “It seems they won’t be the most effective measures and we don’t think they will end up with the problem of insecurity in a short period of time” Erkoreka added.
