Chicken Of The Sea Issues Press Release On Cutting Ties To Supplierff

22 January 2007 United States

Chicken of the Sea International has send out a press release to all major US newspapers in which it states that it has called on tuna suppliers to suspend business practices with Far Ocean Sea Products of Singapore on Jan. 17, citing concerns about destructive fishing methods allegedly practiced by the company. At the same time the company stated it will only do business with businesses that protect the world’s oceans.

San Diego-based Chicken of the Sea said that the environmental group Earth Island Institute issued an advisory that Far Ocean practices gill-netting, whereby nets are dropped vertically into the ocean and fish are caught by the gills in the net.

According to the company’s release, this type of fishing can cause harm to numerous other species, such as dolphins, and violates the company’s and the U.N. policy on sustainable oceans.

The company’s president and chief executive officer, John Signorino, said that Chicken of the Sea will work only with businesses that protect the world’s oceans.
