Tuna Administration To Be Revisedff

31 October 2006 Mexico

The governments of Mexico and Spain have agreed to establish a formal consultancy mechanism for the administration of tuna resources.

During a recent encounter, the Mexican and Spanish Fisheries representatives agreed to work together on complicated issues to be approach in the forthcoming meetings of the Inter-American Commission of Tropical Tuna (IACTT) and of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT), in order to present a common position between both countries.

One of the topics agreed upon is the Scientific Group established within the IACTT to supervise the resources of the different tuna species’ population and to report management recommendations. The idea is to create a scientist team composed by Mexican and Spanish representatives, who could guarantee the recommendations released by the already existing scientific group.

Mexico and Spain are also willing to strengthen the IACTT projects through the fulfillment of the commitments established by both countries in the same commission, and emphasizing the aspect of the financial contributions to this organization.

The
Mexican and Spanish Governments agreed to approach the subject regarding the different fishing arts and techniques used by both fleets, during the upcoming IACTT and ICCAT meetings.  Mexico also noted that the fishery developed with fish aggregating devices -FADs- has caused reductions in the tuna populations in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and it is necessary to regulate its use.
