Mediterranean “Bonito Del Norte” Devastates Market Prices ff

31 July 2006 Spain

The Galician tuna fleet is still waiting for the answers to their requests made a few days ago to the politicians, to palliate the critical situation of this year’s Atlantic Albacore campaign.

The entrance of Mediterranean tuna in the market, traded as “Bonito del Norte” / Atlantic Albacore, is devastating the market prices in Galicia as well. The current prices will no longer cover the fishing trip expenses of the tuna boats.

A tuna boatowner commented “We are waiting for the results of the meeting that is to be held between the counselors of the four Cantabrian States (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Basque Country) and the Spanish Minister for Fisheries Ms. Elena Espinosa. So meanwhile we will give them a vote of confidence".

Meanwhile, there are no changes at the fishing market of Burela; the tuna is sold at prices between Eur 1.80 and 2.70 euro per kilo for the smaller fish and Eur 2.07 and 4 per kilo for the larger pieces.
