Malaysia’s Fisheries Institute To Be Revampedff

28 July 2006 Malaysia
The Fisheries Training Institute in Penang will be restructured so that it is brought up to date terms of scope and research ability to meet the nation’s fishing needs, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

”In Japan and South Korea, two of the most successful fishing nations, the scope of fishery research is wide. We too hope that in the next five years, we will be able to emulate them,” he said.

He pointed out that in Malaysia the potential of deep sea fishing was yet to be exploited but said with new technology the industry could grow by leaps and bounds in future.

”Here in Malaysia, people still think that the fishing industry is unprofitable but in Japan and South Korea the sector is well developed because it is very profitable,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said emphasis would also be given to the development of tuna fishing activities.

”I have requested the relevant agencies to prepare a working paper on how we can expand the tuna fishing industry,” he added.
