Although reports show that Panamanian exports grew 4,2% during the first five months of the year, reaching a volume of USD 498,8 million, compared to the same period of 2005, the figures for fish exports dropped.
The fishing activity was affected by the costs of operation and more expensive fuel.
One of the export products showing red numbers was yellowfin tuna, which dropped by 29%. According to Mr. Jose Motta, representative of the Association of Producers, Processors and Exporters of Sea Products, the costs of operation and fuel continue to be critical factors that affect the exports of the fishing sector.
