Probe Considers Tuna Industry Waste Water Optionsff

10 July 2006 Australia

SA Water is investigating how Port Lincoln’s tuna processing industry can dispose of its waste so it does not have to dump it into the sea.

The Environment Protection Authority is concerned that the discharge is killing seagrass at Proper Bay. As a result, there is a possibility that the factories will connect with the city’s re-use water system.

Council CEO Geoff Dodd says if the industry waste was to feed into the sewer system there needs to be stringent monitoring of salinity. “If it is too high and it’s going to be damaging to our lawns and gardens within the city we’d be advocating a desalination unit be implemented in that plant system so that for those peak periods and during the summertime when we do use that water that we can get that saline content down” he said.
