EU Tuna Vessels Forced To Stop Fishing in Senegal Watersff

3 July 2006 European Union

Senegal’s refusal to reduce the financial compensation it receives from the European Union (EU) in exchange for fishing permits to operate in its waters caused the negotiation failure between the African country and the European Commission to renew a tuna fishing agreement already effective since 2002.

Spain was the EU member most benefited from this agreement with 51 fishing licenses out of the 78 licenses approved for tuna fishery, as well as the higher amount of tons of demersal species shared with Portugal, France and Greece.

Due to this lack of agreement the European vessels will have to stop their fishing activities in Senegalese waters. Senegal did not accept Brussels intention to reduce the financial compensation it received every year.
