Central Vietnam To Build Tuna Processing Portff

27 April 2006 Vietnam

The central coastal Phu Yen Province is planning to build a US$5 million tuna processing port funded by Japan’s non-refundable assistance fund, facilitating export services.

A Japanese international consult company has completed design of a tuna outfit- the first modern facility in Vietnam, the provincial fisheries department said Sunday.

The new outfit will be improved and expanded basing on the current one including a larger wharf, processing workshops, stocks and agent chains to buy tuna.

The new wharf is facilitated to service 700 tuna-fishing vessels instead of 300 vessels now.

Phu Yen is viewed as the highest catching output of ocean tuna, with the annual output of 5,000 tons per year, being followed by the central neighboring Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa provinces, yielding 3,000 and 2,000 tons respectively.

Last year, the local fishermen caught over 5,000 tons of tuna, earning VND306 billion ($19.125 million).

Majority of Vietnamese-made tuna products are exported to Japan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the US, and the UK.
