Spain A FAO meeting on world fish trade is to be held from 30 May - 2 June in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Over 50 countries will participate in the event which is the tenth meeting of the FAO Sub-Committee on Fish Trade. The event is expected to bring together over 50 governments in discussions on a wide range of issues related to international trade in fish and fishery products, valued at over $70 billion annually. A number of international and non-governmental organizations will also be present.
Scheduled for discussion are:
-Proposed FAO guidelines for responsible fish trade -New safety and quality requirements for imports of fish and fishery products -Labeling of fish to promote responsible trade and “traceability†systems for tracking fish “from net to table†-The role of fish trade in strengthening food security in the developing world -The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) and its implications for international fish trade -Rehabilitation and reconstruction of fisheries in tsunami-affected countries
An ancillary body of FAO’s Committee on Fisheries, the Sub-Committee on Fish Trade is an international advisory body which meets every two years to share information, discuss issues related to fish trade, make recommendations to FAO regarding the agency's work and agree upon common policies and strategies for managing international trade in fishery products.
