Explosion In Tuna Seiner Kills Twoff

10 April 2006 Papua New Guinea

Two engine crew were killed while another was seriously hurt during an explosion inside the engine room of a tuna fishing vessel owned by RD Fishing.

Firm officials said the explosion occurred last March 29 in Papua New Guinea.

”One of its auxiliary engines (of F/V Dolly) exploded instantly killing two engine crew and injuring another who were stationed at the engine room. The rest of the eleven crew members were not harmed,” RD Fishing said.

The vessel was tending a payaw or fish aggregating device when the accident happened.

Company officials, however, declined to reveal the names of those who died during the accident.

”The fatalities will be brought on shore in Papua New Guinea for proper documentation with the authorities there, and then transported back to the Philippines. The families of the victims were already informed of the incident,” they said.
