EII Website Opens Attack On Non Approved Tuna Companiesff

7 April 2006 United States

The Earth Island Institute’s International Marine Mammal Project (IMMP) recently announced a new website for consumers and the general public about Dolphin Safe tuna. On the website the organization very specifically names and attacks companies that are not working according the EII dolphin safe method.

“Many people are confused about what Dolphin Safe means and how tuna is monitoring by Earth Island to ensure dolphins and other marine life are not harmed during fishing,” stated David Phillips, Director of IMMP. “Our new website at www.dolphinsafe.org includes information for the general public and consumers.”

The new website includes fact sheets and policy statements about the standards that must be met by tuna companies in order to be part of Earth Island’s international Dolphin Safe Tuna monitoring program. It further includes a list of more than 300 companies worldwide that adhere to Earth Island’s standards, backed up by Earth Island's international monitoring efforts in the field.

Also included are alerts for consumers and activists about dolphin-deadly tuna that masquerades as “dolphin safe”, despite the deaths of thousands of dolphins from the practices of these fishing companies.

“Consumers and the public can help save dolphins in two ways”, notes Phillips. “They can avoid buying tuna that harms dolphins, and they can alert Earth Island directly when they find such tuna being sold in markets throughout the world. Earth Island will follow up with the store to ensure the owners and staff know that the tuna they are selling is in fact NOT dolphin safe and harms marine life.”

More than 96% of the global tuna catch is conducted by tuna companies that adhere to the international Dolphin Safe standards of no encirclement of dolphins during an entire fishing trip, no killing or harming any dolphins, no use of drift gill nets, and reducing bycatch of other non-target species.
