According to the data reported by National Fishery Chamber’s report, Ecuador's total fishery exports were worth USD 390 million last year, coming second in the ranking of private exports.
National Fishery Chamber’s president César Rohón indicated that the target for 2003 is to reach USD 400 million, whilst continuing to consolidate the activity. During the last five year fishery has positioned itself as one of the most important export sectors in Ecuador.
The Ecuadorian tuna fishery accounts for USD 255 million, therefore 65 per cent of the total national fishery activity and provides raw material for Ecuador's strong tuna industry, which processes the product to be exported frozen as pre-cooked loins and canned. Although catches have dropped, the value however has risen, boosting overall revenue.
According to Rohón, Ecuador’s President elect Lucio Gutiérrez should apply effective commercial and negotiation policies to obtain a better access to the US market. He indicated that it is fundamental to work on new strategies, leaving radical views aside and aim towards sustainable development.
