Calvo Tuna Fleet Complies With Turtle Protection Regulationsff

18 January 2006 El Salvador

The tuna vessels own by the Spanish Calvo Group in El Salvador have been revised and confirmed to meet all the regulations to protect and avoid the death of marine turtles. The Calvo Group Operation Manager, Mr. Miguel Angel Penalba, reported this.

According to Mr. Penalba, the IATTC is the organization in charge of regulating fisheries in waters of the Pacific Ocean. The tuna vessels carry a biologist onboard to survey that these rules are fulfilled.

"All our tuna vessels leave port an independent surveyor on board", Calvo's Operation Manager said.

The Calvo vessels use their purseining nets to catch tuna, a method which does not harm the sea turtles. Nevertheless, should any turtle get caught in the net, the biologists mission is to make sure that it is thrown back in the water.
