Australian Long-Line Tuna fleets Go Greenff

10 January 2003 Australia

Long-line tuna fishers are introducing a new code of practice on Australia's east coast to minimise the impact of fishing on turtles and seabirds.

The industry has developed the guidelines, which will come into effect at the end of January.

A number of meetings will be along the coast in coming weeks, to provide information to operators before the document's release.

The East Coast Tuna Boat Owners Association's Hans Jusseit says the code proves that the industry is doing what it can to help in marine life conservation.

"To bring about recognition as well as change in the way fishermen do their fishing to ensure that we have minimal environmental impact," Jusseit said.

"That goes all the way through from wastage of product of seafood, all the way to avoiding catches of species that we no longer want or need or can't use."
