Transport Strike Forces Canneries To Suspend Productionff

27 October 2005 Spain

The transport strike which commenced earlier this week in the Galician Arousa-area of Spain is causing an alarming situation for several tuna canning factories, which have suspended their activities.

In this important fishing and canning area of Galicia, the transport strike is holding up operations at the tuna canning plants in three different ways. Not only is the strike obstructing the supply of raw material to the canneries for production, but it is also impeding the canneries to deliver their canned tuna to the markets and to receive new empty tin cans to proceed with further production.

Due to this situation, the canning companies cannot sell their products, which are saturating their stocks, overflowing warehouses and the sector’s whole production chain.
