Mexico Although the Mexican tuna sector landed a total 52,587 tons of tuna during the first half of this year, almost 2,000 tons more than during the same period of 20004, the bluefin catches could register a drop this year, mainly because of less captures for tuna farming.
According to Fishery assistant representative in Baja California, Mr. Jorge Alberto Covarrubias Lopez, there are reports indicting that catches of bluefin tuna for the fattening farms were less than previous year, when they reached almost 4,500 tons.
The reason for this reduction is unknown, however it could be related a cyclical natural phenomenon since bluefin tuna is a highly migratory species.
