Abundance Of Tuna Around Andamans Can Be Tappedff

12 July 2005 India
Abundance of tuna fish in the sea around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands could be tapped for export as well as for domestic consumption. “Tuna is found abundantly around the islands. There is an immense potential for tuna export. A lesson needs to be drawn from Lakshdweep islands where this potential has been tapped satisfactorily,” says V S Somvanshi, director general, Fisheries Survey of India.

He expressed surprise that despite being a zone with great abundance of fishing resources, the islands had failed to tap its potential. He said the deep-sea fish catch in the Andaman Sea has remained normal and economically viable even after the tsunami.
