Database On Mexican Fishing Licenses Upgradedff

25 April 2005 Mexico

Mexican National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishery (CONAPESCA) has initiated a seminar with the Fisheries Sub-Delegations of the Mexican States, to improve the integration and response procedures towards the requests for commercial fishing licenses.

CONAPESCA’s general director for Aquaculture and Fishery Regulations, Mr. Prisciliano Melendrez, remarked the need to extend and upgrade the current database to include ample information about the fishing commercial licenses of all fishing activities as well as the size of boats operating in every state as well as on a national level. With the support from the Sub-Delegations, the database will result in a clear, reliable and efficient project. He therefore also requested the Fisheries sub-delegates of the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Area to make available the statistical information about the fishing licenses. This data will enable the decision taking process, not only regarding fishery regulations, but also to reduce the country’s fishing effort and thus reach a more sustainable and responsible fishing activity.

Mr. Melendrez indicated that in regards to inspection and surveillance, the data available on fishing licenses and permits in any strategic area will allow identifying with accuracy the illegal fishing activity in the country. He also mentioned that they are aiming at improving the administrative procedures in order to reduce the length of time needed to provide a response to the fishing sector, as well as assure that regulations are applied within the norms of the fishing activity.

During the seminar, the participants will work on strategies to enable prompt and efficient responses to each fishing license request, as well as work on the systems to integrate and control the fishing permit structures.
