EII Congratulates Solomon Tuna Canneryff

1 April 2005 United States

According to Mark Berman (the Bermanator), assistant director of the Earth Island Institute (EII), there have been misleading reports in the press about the Soltai tuna cannery which is the only cannery on the Solomon Islands. According to Mr. Berman it should be clear that “Soltai along with the Government, which is a 51 percent owner, implemented the ban on dolphin exports so that their dolphin safe tuna could resume exports to Earth Island approved Dolphin Safe companies”. He continues: “Earth Island congratulates the Solomon Island Government and Soltai for doing the right thing”.

The reaction of EII comes after a newspaper article by the Solomon Star which misquoted a tuna industry representative and thus created the impression that the cannery had faced an international ban on canned tuna due to dolphin penning on the Island. The ban only concerned the export of live dolphins, not canned tuna.
