Canned food products are one of the most stolen items in supermarkets, due to its size and characteristics it is an easy target for theft. Canning producers affirm this fact. Such as other attractive items such as CD’s, books and cosmetics, canned products to not include the radio-frequency label that other items have. The normal anti-theft device placed on products activates the store exit alarms if it is not previously deactivated by the scanner at the check out cash register. However, in the case of canned products, the tin works as a screen that cancels the alarm.
Checkpoint System, a worldwide manufacturer of solutions to identify and protect items for the supply chain, has created a solution for this problem. The Spanish canning company Pita Hermanos, with factories in Vilagarcia and Cabo de Cruz (Boiro), has been the first one to take on this system in modern technology. Both companies, Checkpoint System and Pita Hermanos have signed an agreement to incorporate a high precision applicator specially designed by Checkpoint System for the tins of the Cuca brand premium canned fish. Cuca is the brand commercialized by Pita Hermanos, which also include a variety of high value tuna. This way, this Galician cannery will already incorporate an alarm system against thefts during the production process itself, for those clients that request such condition.
However the radio-frequency label will not be added to all canned products such as those containing low valued products. According to Ricardo Caballero from Checkpoint, “basically the system will not be applied to cans containing low valued products because this would highly increase the final product’s costâ€.
This modern technology system is based on “the application of pneumatic or blowing pressure, that allows to place 16,000 labels per hour with a 1.5 millimeter-precisionâ€, according to technicians. It’s quite easy. The radio-frequency label will be placed on the inside of the carton box. The packaging will include a crease that will unable the metal to touch the carton and cancel the anti-theft device.
Although the system is quite simple, the general director of Checkpoint, Mariano Moro, emphasized the great progress this solution provides. Mr. Moro also expressed his appreciation to Pita Hermanos “for enabling Checkpoint to demonstrate the efficiency of the labeling program on their well-known premium Cuca brandâ€.
He also emphasized that the new device will not only increase sales, but will enable retailers to obtain higher profits since it will reduce their losses generated by theft considerably.
