Special Mission Spain To Peru To Boost Fishing Cooperationff

28 October 2004 Spain

A Spanish delegation is currently visiting Peru until October 30th 2004 with the objective to intensify the fishing cooperation between Spain and Peru.

The delegation is formed by Juan M. Vieites Baptista de Sousa, Secretary General of the National Association of Canned Fish Producers (ANFACO) as well as Director General of the National Techno Center for the Conservation of Fishery Products (CECOPESCA), together with Gonzalo Ojea, technician in charge of the Area of the Engineering, Innovation and Technological Development.  These organizations have been active in strengthening fishing collaboration between these organizations and Peru during the past few years.

The visit will also enable both parties to study the possibilities of establishing trade agreements between Spanish and Peruvian companies that will facilitate finding new ways of business and new markets for products coming from Spain and Peru. The final target is to contribute to the economic and social progress of both countries, as well as to the socioeconomic and commercial interchange of the companies associated to ANFACO and those of Peru.

Participating at the meetings on behalf of Peru are the Minister of Production Alfonso Velasquez Tuesta, the Fishery Vice-minister Alejandro Jimenez Morales and the President of the National Fishery Association (NFA), Raul Alberto Sanchez Sotomayor, among others, in addition to industrialists of the sector and representatives of Universities and other organizations related to the fishing sector.

The meetings will take in the coastal cities of Lima-Callao, Chimbote (the country’s main fishing port) and Pisco. The delegation will have the opportunity of getting to know the fishing processing industries as well as the artesanal fishing sector. The ANFACO delegation will be accompanied by the representatives of the Fishing Technological Institute of Peru (FTIP), public organization from the Peruvian Ministry of Production, with which ANFACO signed Agreements for Cooperation and Scientific and Technical Collaboration in 2000 and 2003. FTIP is also the acting local partner in all the projects of cooperation between ANFACO and Peru.  These projects began in 1999 with the Fishery and Aquaculture Development Support Program of Peru (PADESPA).

The projects currently in process count with the financial support of the Xunta of Galicia.
