Galicia & Peru Start Cooperation In Fishing Development ff

Galicia, Spain and Peru will intensify their cooperation in the development of the fishing and aquaculture sectors, according to and agreement signed in Spain this week between the president of the Xunta of Galicia, Manuel Fraga and the minister of Production of Peru, Alfonso Velasquez. 

The agreement, set up within the framework of the Conference “International Fishing Cooperation”, establishes the basis for the scientific cooperation between the two administrations, especially regarding the quality control of seafood products, the evaluation of the environmental conditions and the biotechnology issues. It also determines that Peru and Galicia will work jointly in the education and training of fishermen, aquaculture workers and scientists. 

The pact also refers to incentives for Galician and Peruvian companies to participate in fairs and exhibitions, to support commercial exchanges, mutual investments and to organize seminars. This will enable Peru to incorporate to the group of countries formed by Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Brazil, Mauritania and Namibia, which are work together in cooperation projects of the Fishery Council. The Spanish tuna fleet is active in almost all of these countries.

Participants to the International Conference held in Vigo, Spain were fishery representatives from Canada, Chile, Peru and Spain, as well as the Spanish regions: the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Euskadi, Catalonia, Asturias, Murcia and Galicia.

During the conference, Mr. Fraga emphasized Galicia’s interest in taking advantage of its current leadership within the fishery training and investigation. He wants to strengthen the collaboration with those countries that have an important presence of the Galician (tuna) fleet and with nations, which share deep cultural bonds, as is the case of Latin America.
