.Galicia, Spain and Peru will intensify their cooperation in the development of the fishing and aquiculture sectors, according to and agreement signed this week between the president of the Xunta of Galicia, Manuel Fraga and the minister of Production of Peru, Alfonso Velasquez.
Peru is thus becoming the eighth country in the world to sign with Galicia to cooperate within these sectors, after Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Brazil, Mauritania and Namibia.
The agreement establishes the bases for the scientific cooperation between the two administrations, especially regarding the quality control of sea products, the evaluation of the environmental conditions and the biotechnology issues. It also determines that Peru and Galicia will work jointly in the formation of fishermen, aquiculture workers and scientists.
Spanish and Peruvian will also cooperate to design and implement training projects for fishers, fish farmers, and scientists, support commercial exchanges and carry out mutual investments.

During the opening ceremony for the conference, Fraga Iribarne said it is necessary to “strengthen universal principles as basic as global human development, equity, justice and active commitment against poverty.â€
He said that Galicia, as leader in fishery training and research, has to take the opportunity to “tighten ties†with those countries where her vessels presence is more significant, especially the Latin American countries.
â€We are open to the development of strategic alliances to meet our needs,†said the Peruvian minister after the signing of the cooperation agreement, adding that Peru “has a lot of work to do.â€
