Samoa Packing Replaces “Chicken” For “Sina O Le Vasa”ff

15 July 2004 American Samoa

The chief executive officer (CEO) of Samoa Packing's parent company in Central America, Dennis Mussel, has agreed to change the registered name of “Samoa Packing, Chicken of the Sea” to “Samoa Packing, Sina o le Vasa.”

His decision was publicly announced during special remarks he made before a crowd of almost 3,000 people attending the celebration of the company's golden jubilee in American Samoa last Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Stadium.

It was Governor Togiola Tulafono who suggested the new Samoan name. He said that, “While sitting there with the distinguished guests during the employee parade, we saw that a mermaid was running around the track. We inquired as to what is the mermaid's name and was told that it's called 'Chicken of the Sea.' I thought how 50 years later that the company mermaid logo was still the same, so we all agreed to give a better-suited name for the mermaid, a Samoan name, 'Sina o le Vasa'.”

Togiola jokingly stated, “I was thinking to name your mermaid as 'Tama'imoa o le Vasa,' but I just remembered that there is no chicken in the ocean.”

He immediately relayed his idea to the CEO saying, “Mr. Mussel, the label on every can of wahoo distributed by Samoa Packing, there is a picture of the company logo, the mermaid. The mermaid is a symbol of success and economic stability for American Samoa. So in commemoration of the company in American Samoa, we've come up with a great name for the mermaid, 'Sina o le Vasa' translated 'the beauty of the ocean'.”
