According reports in the Mexican press, the Italian government could eliminate -in the next months- the 24% tariff it has on Mexican tuna, which could create an increase of Mexican tuna exports towards Italy. The Ensenada Fishery subdelegate, Jorge Covarrubias, informed that this topic came about during a meeting in Italy last week.
The AIDCP label has already been acknowledged as guarantee of dolphin free fishery, as well as assuring that no predatory fishing methods have been used during the capture of the tuna, as stipulated by Dolphin Safe. Italy could initiate a campaign to inform consumers that the tuna with the AIDCP label is caught in an orderly way and therefore Mexican tuna can be imported in the European Union markets.
The AIDCP label was approved two years ago by scientific groups and supported by serious ecological groups like GreenPeace or World Wild Life Fund, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
According to the Mexican press: “The Earth Island Institute received protection detaining the initial sales of tuna with the AIDCP in the United States, and initiated an international campaign to avoid that the elimination of their own logo could make them loose the 5 cents per carton that they are obtaining from great companies such as Chicken of the Sea, StarKist and Bumble Bee.â€
