Alaskan Fish Prices High, Likely To Stay Thereff

29 April 2004 Alaska

Any time you think it's a small world, you're not thinking about the food you eat.

Mitch Koritansky of 10th & M Seafoods was hustling Tuesday morning to locate tuna. It seems the commercial fishers on the Atlantic side of life have been dragging their heels in hopes of driving up prices on all fish. Tuna's one of them.

Because of that, tuna suppliers in other waters are having to make up the difference in supply to quench the Right Coast's thirst. So Koritansky was busy working the phones this week.

The result means a huge jump in prices here. Normally the sashimi-grade tuna runs about $16 a pound retail. Koritansky expects it to climb to nearly $20 per pound.

Since much of his No. 1 tuna goes to sushi bars, maybe hamachi lovers will face sticker shock.

Big-eye and yellowtail represent the bulk of his 500- to 700-pound orders, but he said he also gets some of the smaller bluefin tuna.
