Sales Miau Drop 2% In 2003 - Exports Up 16%

The Spanish tuna cannery Bernardo Alfagame, owner of the canned tuna brand Miau, reported a sales turnover in 2003 of 80.6 million units, which represents a drop of 2.18 percent in comparison with 2002; whereas, however, Alfagame’s exports reached 7 million units, therefore a 16 percent increase.

According to the data provided by Alfagame to the Spanish press, the tuna cannery processed 48,600 tons of fish, which represents almost a 2% drop compared to the previous year.  Alfagame also indicated that 95% of its sales went via supermarkets, while the remaining 5% was sold to hotels.

Bernardo Alfageme has three factories in Vigo, specialized in the production of skipjack and yellowfin tuna, Bonito del Norte, salads, precooked meals; also a factory in Ribadumia (Pontevedra) processing sardines, mackerel, anchovy; a factory in El Grove, producing muscles, clams, squid. The company also owns the brands “Equisiteces”, “Eureca”, “Alfa”, “Atlanta” and ”La Providencia”.
