Spain Consumes Eur 1.1 Billion In Canned Fishff

The annual fish consumption per capita in Spain reached 36.5 kilos in 2003 reported the Food Panel from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fishery and Food (MAPA).

According to MAPA, the total spending on fish consumption totaled Eur 9,504.30 million in 2003, which represents 3.7% more than the Eur 9,162.83 million in 2002. This increase in fish consumption corresponds mainly to a general tendency by the consumer towards a Mediterranean diet.

The total 2003 fish consumption in the household, hotels and restaurants reached 1,497.21 million kilos compared to the 1,486 million kilos in 2002; with a household spending of Eur 7.2 billion and Eur 2.3 billion by hotels and restaurants.

Fresh fish represented 80% of the total fish consumption in 2003, with a consumption totaling 553,65 million kilos (Eur 3,770.3 million); canned fish totaled 157,65 million kilos valued at Eur 1.1 billion; frozen fish represented 130,85 million kilos (Eur 769.8 million); shellfish 306,44 million kilos (Eur 2,100.87 million).

The value for fishery products reached an average price of Eur 6.25 per kilo, which represents 2.9% more than the Eur 6.17 per kilo in 2002.
