The European Commission has moved to update EU legislation on prohibiting imports of Atlantic bluefin tuna from Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone – after cooperation with the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
Additionally, the Commission also updated legislation on big-eye tuna imports from Bolivia, Cambodia, Equatorial Guinea, Georgia and Sierra Leone, also in line with ICCAT policy.
The laws need amending to take on further ICCAT guidelines for both bluefin and big-eye tuna imports.
Current status: The proposal from the commission has been sent to the Council.
