France's former nuclear test base at Hao Atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago of French Polynesia will become a US$40 million tuna farm, according to a French newspaper, Les Echo.
Backed by French, Japanese and Chinese finance, it’s due to begin producing 1000 tons of tuna a year from June, rising gradually to 2000 tons worth US$20 million at present market prices. A lot of the tuna's destined for the Japanese sashimi market.
