GE Sells High Power Purse Seiner Engines To Dongwon ff

GE Marine has announced the sale of two 16V250 marine diesel engines to Korean based Dongwon Industries, one of the world’s largest tuna fishing companies. The sale was made at the Kormarine International Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment Exhibition in Busan, South Korea. The engines can power 80-meter-long tuna purse seiners.
The engines are International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier II and Korean Register of Shipping (KRS) certified and are scheduled for commissioning in early 2014. GE has been designing and building diesel engines for more than 40 years and has more than 15,000 operating worldwide.
John Manison, general manager of GE Marine, said: “We are pleased that Dongwon chose to add GE Marine engines to power their world-class fishing fleets. These engines are noted for delivering fuel savings, lower life cycle costs and ease of maintenance – making them ideal for these ships.â€
The tuna fishing company is the owner of one of the American top three tuna brands, StarKist, and is Korea’s largest tuna fishing company. In 2011, Korea was responsible for catching 258,995 ton of tuna, making it the seventh largest catching nation that year. It dropped down from fifth place in 2010.
Earlier this year, Dongwon announced that it had signed a deal with Bright Foods Group, the largest seafood producer and distributer in China in order to increase its tuna sales in the Chinese market. Dongwon forecasts annual tuna sales of USD 466.37 million by 2018 in China as a result of the partnership.
