StarKist Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Tuna “Made In America“ ff

17 July 2013 United States

StarKist tuna has celebrated its anniversary and marked its 50th year in American Samoa with the launch of a newly branded “Made in America” canned Chunk Light Tuna in Water and the same product in oil, prepared and packed in the U.S. territory.

One of the Big Three tuna brands in the US, StarKist, is owned by South Korean Company Dongwon Industries and processes often Korean fished tuna caught in the waters of the Western Pacific.

The launch of the new “Made in America” products sees the StarKist cans get a revamp with the addition of a red, white and blue American flag banner that will be sold in stores across the U.S.

The company’s largest tuna facility is situated in the capital city of American Samoa, Pago Pago, where nowadays mostly citizens and immigrants from neighboring Samoa are employed to process the caught tuna which is then exported to America.

“StarKist has proudly had operations in American Samoa since 1963, and we are thrilled and honored to be celebrating this milestone anniversary in American Samoa with new 'Made In America' branded products,” said Frank Pogue, Vice President, Marketing and Innovation at StarKist.

By convening a Stronger Economy for American Samoa (SEAS) coalition, StarKist says it has hopes to raise awareness of the unique and significant economic challenges facing American Samoa and the importance of the territory to the United States.
