Honduras Also Wants To Become A Tuna Exporterff

30 April 2013 Honduras

Honduras seeks to open market for the export of tuna, according to officials of the Directorate General for Fisheries and Aquaculture (Digepesca), from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

The country’s national fishing fleet is now in the process of switching and specializing itself in tropical tuna fisheries, said Digepesca director, Miguel Angel Suazo.

He stated that tuna is one of the most important businesses internationally.

Furthermore, Suazo said there’s an event being organized in San Jose, Costa Rica, in order to consolidate Honduras in participating at two important conventions: the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) as well as the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) , because both are international bodies that regulate the management of the tuna fishery in each ocean.

According Suazo, Honduras’ participation in these conventions would be an important window of opportunity for the country, because it would be taking advantage of one of the most expensive fish resources worldwide. Similarly, it would generate new jobs and bring in foreign currencies.
