Sri Lanka intends on becoming a leader for sustainable tuna fisheries in the South Asian region.
Sri Lanka’s minister of fisheries and aquatic resource development, Rajitha Senaratne, addressed a reception during the ESE. The country sees long line tuna fishing as the most sustainable fishery and an important export.
Senaratne says that the fisheries sector has now introduced input controls on tuna fishing, including reduced gill netting, promotion of long lining, banning purse seining and trawling. The fisheries sector is heavily promoting its work on preventing illegal, unregulated and undocumented fishing, as well as increasing the traceability of its products.
