Committee Suggests Mid-July Opening Of Canadian Bluefin Fisheriesff

19 April 2013 Canada
The PEIFA Tuna Advisory committee will be recommending the tuna fishery in Island waters open July 15.

The committee falls under the umbrella of the PEI Fishermen’s Association and group president Mike McGeoghegan said the committee hopes to submit its recommendation on a conservation harvesting plan to DFO in the very near future.

However, McGeoghegan did say the group will be suggesting the season run until Oct. 1. They are suggesting a limit of one fish per day for each vessel. They are also suggesting the practice of prohibiting a transfer of tags be continued.

The association president stressed the recommendations of the committee are just that — recommendations. The final decision on a plan rests with DFO.

Last year, there were 359 licensed harvesters, 11 commercial communal license holders and 348 commercial license holders. The quota last year was 126 metric tons.
