Curto Wants To Build Best South Pacific Cannery In US Samoa ff

Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga and US Congressman Faleomavaega Eni had the honor of cutting the ribbon to officially open Tri-Marine International’s Samoa Tuna Processor (STP) Inc., state-of-the-art cold storage facility during a ceremony held Friday at the STP compound at Atu’u.

Tri-Marine’s chairman Renato Curto told the audience prior to the ribbon cutting that the new 5000+ ton cold storage facility is phase one of the company’s commitment to investing and operating in American Samoa. Curto, dressed in the STP uniform, said his dream is that STP is “to be the best cannery in the South Pacific.”

He says the freezer will allow efficiency in delivering tuna as well as preserving stocks.

“This is the first step to producing good tuna. You bring the tuna good from the ocean you keep it good you keep it frozen. And this is a very efficient way of preserving the volume of fish and this is what we are all about.”

Curto, Faleomavaega and Lolo acknowledged in their remarks former Gov. Togiola Tulafono, who convinced Tri-Marine to invest in the territory at a time when COS Samoa Packing had pulled out of the local market. Togiola was among those in the audience.

In June 10th Thai Union with its partners will open in Lae, Papua New Guinea the newest and to date most modern “Majestic” tuna cannery in the South Pacific with a full capacity of 350 M/T a day.
