Sri Lanka Minister of Fisheries Rajitha Senaratne said the government plans to amend the Fisheries Act to punish the culprits violating international maritime laws, writes Colombo Page.
The new laws are to be in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the principles of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission.
Under the new laws, the vessels sized for violation of international maritime laws will be subjected to a Rs. 1.5 million fine and confiscation and the license of captains of multi day vessels will also be suspended.
The new laws are expected to manage the fishermen entering the international sea and guarantee the safety of both fishermen and the marine resources.
