24 January 2013 Belgium

With less than 90 days to go until the European Tuna Conference 2013, Atuna is pleased to announce the key topics that will be debated and discussed by tuna industry experts and decision-makers.

On April 22 in Brussels, Belgium, the 4th edition of the ETC will focus on “The Economics of Tuna” by providing insight into important issues such as:

• How are the global tuna catches and where are they heading?
• What factors are driving the global raw tuna price to record levels?
• What are the costs of sustainable tuna fishing?
• Sustainable FAD fishing: illusion or innovation?
• Are European consumers willing to pay a premium for sustainable tuna?
• Price elasticity? How are European retailers coping with record prices during the economic crisis?

Other dynamic topics that will be addressed include:

• How are the critical cost factors in the canned tuna industry developing?
• What is the future role of the importer within the value chain?
• Who will become the dominating tuna processing center in the coming decade – PNG or China?
• Is social accountability – on land and at sea – the next additional cost factor?
• How are the leading tuna players in Europe financially doing?
• Are the newest product innovations bringing higher profits?
• What are the consequences and lessons learned from Thailand’s problems with EU health authorities?
• Do the latest EU recommendations on mercury pose a threat to the tuna industry?

300 participants from all aspects of the global tuna industry will be attending the ETC 2013, and with the European Seafood Exposition – the world’s largest seafood show – taking place immediately after from April 23-25, this is one visit well worth the trip.
