The world’s largest retailers – including major supermarket and discount chains that sell tuna – grew 5% in revenue in fiscal 2011, despite the economic crisis in Europe and the USA , according to a new report by Deloitte.

In their annual “Global Powers of Retailing 2013” report, which identifies the 250 largest retailers around the world, the group found the total revenue of the top 250 retailers surpassed USD 4 trillion for the first time.

U.S. retail giant Walmart accounted for more than 10% of this total revenue, with sales near USD 450 billion in 2011. France’s Carrefour hung onto its second place position despite a sales decrease, while the UK’s Tesco landed in third.

Two German companies, the Schwarz Group and Aldi Einkauf GmbH & Co, responsible for major discount chains Lidl and Aldi respectively, placed in the top 10 ahead of two American retailers.
