The Atlantic albacore campaign of Galicia, Spain, finalized with “positive results” this year. The fishing activity during the months of the coastal season was “much better” than what was recorded last year, which was one of the worst in recent years. The Burela fish market where about 70% of the Atlantic Albacore or “Bonito del Norte” caught by Galicia is auctioned, reached 1527 tons of the species between June and mid August. This represents an increase of 56.6% over the same period of 2011, in which 550 tons were sold, according to data provided by the manager of the Burela Shipowners Association (ABSA), Miguel Neira.

The fleet began this campaign in June with the goal “to reach 1,600 tons.” Although the fishermen where a few tons short to meeting their goal, spokesmen from the port of Burela are assuring that the results are “satisfactory”. For the industry, the volume of the catches comes out positive and within the average of recent years, although slightly below. “We have significantly improved compared to 2011, which was a very bad year. However, we have not yet been able to reach the figures achieved in 2005, 2006 or 2010, which were the best in recent years," explains ABSA.
