John West Australia blocked its Facebook page from the international community yesterday after it was bombarded with comments about its destructive fishing practices.

The concerns were raised after Greenpeace released a video spoof of the tuna brand’s newly launched “Into the Woods” campaign. The spoof is the latest target of the environment group’s push to end destructive fishing. The video shows scenes from John West’s ad interspersed with graphic content of marine life being killed.

John West Australia uses fish-aggregating devices (FADs) to catch their tuna, which results in the by-catch of other marine life such as juvenile tuna, sharks and turtles.

Other major Australian brands Greenseas, Safcol and Sirena have made commitments to stop using FADs.
