The scope for boosting relationship between India and Australia in promoting tuna fish trade from Visakhapatnam was discussed during a recent meeting.
Australian Trade Commissioner Michael Carter spoke to several scientists during his visit to Visakhapatnam and interacted with boat operators, fishermen and tuna long-liners, assessing the trends in tuna fishery of the State on Friday.
He said that tuna fishery resource had tremendous potential of export to other countries and emphasized improvement in the post-harvest value addition of the resource for better value realization. Mr. Carter stressed the need for implementing mother boat concept to get better prices for traditional fishermen by purchasing tuna caught at sea by mother boat and preserve/process immediately to prevent post-harvest losses and maintain sashimi grade.
The availability of air connectivity from Visakhapatnam to Singapore from October 28 would boost export of tuna to global market, he said.
