Correction To Oct. 2 Atuna Article Spanish Imports From PNGff

18 October 2012 Spain

By Atuna.com

Unfortunately Atuna made some factual errors in the article, “Spanish Industry Powers PNG Expansion In EU,” published on Oct. 2. Due to human error in compiling the statistics, it was reported incorrectly that Spain’s canned tuna imports from Papua New Guinea had jumped from 1,760 tons in 2010 to 4,789 tons in 2011. These figures include by error the imports of canned tuna and pre-cooked loins; under the European Commission’s Market Access Database, both products are grouped together under the “heat preserved” category. After correction when the import volume of frozen pre-cooked loins is subtracted, the data shows that Spain imported only a total of 313 tons of canned tuna from PNG in 2011, compared to 13.5 tons in 2010.

With this correction, PNG exported about 5,130 tons of tuna to Spain last year, and not 9,600 tons as the Oct. 2 article previously reported. This means the Spanish market accounted for about 20% of PNG’s total exports to the EU in 2011, which reached 26,000 tons.
