Calvo El Salvador posted positive export growth in the first eight months of this year, with the value of its canned tuna shipments reaching USD 59.6 million.
In 2011, the Spanish owned tuna processing company’s exports totaled USD 68.9 million.
Between January and August, Spain was the main market as the country imported USD 39.7 million worth of preserved tuna, frozen pre-cooked or canned. Other leading destinations were Italy, Libya, Finland and the United States.
Costa Rica also continued to be a strong market as it imported USD 8.5 million worth of tuna products. The average canned tuna consumption per capita in the Central American country is three kilos a year.
Calvo El Salvador is also considering increasing the level of production at its factories to keep up with the strong demand from Colombia.
