The Japanese government is ready to explore infrastructure development for tuna fisheries in Indonesia’s eastern regions, Negara Indonesia Timur. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) director in Indonesia Kohara Motofumi said there is a good prospect for fishing businesses in the region.

The area is supposed to have rich tuna resources, and is currently besides Indonesian vessels also frequented by Philippine vessels.

“Japan sees the fishing sector potential in Indonesia’s eastern regions to be very good, so, we are ready to assist with its development as long as the Indonesian government is ready,” said Motofumi in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 3.

Motofumi said that one of the JICA’s projects in marine infrastructure is the Samudera Nizam Zachman Fishing Port in Penjaringan, North Jakarta. The port is a project that is being developed by the Indonesian government through a 2004 loan from the JICA worth USD 334 million.
