171 Ecuadorian Tuna Longliners Switch To Circle Hooksff

The Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture has received  50 000 Circle  C16 / 0 hooks for the Regulation and Fishing Replacement Program in the artisanal fishing fleet. The circular hooks were donated by the organization Conservation International.

This donation will serve to refill the former “J” hooks for C circle hooks 16/0 for the fishing of tuna and billfish, said Undersecretary of Fisheries, Jimmy Martinez. He noted that currently 171 longline fishing vessels and nursery boats had been replace C16 / 0 circular hooks, in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabi and Santa Elena. The “J” type hooks produce high mortality of by-catch of non-target species, such as turtles, sharks and dolphins, he said.
