The tuna harvest in Port Lincoln, South Australia, is in full swing, with the industry saying it’s shaping up as a good year.

Chief executive officer of the Southern Bluefin Tuna Industry Association, Brian Jeffriess, says optimum water temperatures have helped improve the quality of the fish.

But he says one of the downsides is the on-going issue of poaching, which appears to be on a commercial scale.

“I’ve got no doubt it is someone’s commercial business and obviously we’re watching certain people, but the bigger issue here is not the number of fish which are taken in a poaching expedition, it’s the way their methods spook the rest of the fish.”
